Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 2 1/4 cups white sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 (1 ounce) bottle red food coloring
  • 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.
  2. Sift together the flour, baking soda and salt; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well with each addition. Beat in the buttermilk and vanilla.
  4. In a small bowl, mix together the cocoa and food coloring. Add to the batter and stir to combine. Add the sifted ingredients to the batter, stirring just until combined. Stir in the vinegar.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  6. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire cooling rack and cool completely.
