Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.

In the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, scraping down the bowl between each addition. Add the vanilla extract.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. With the mixer on low speed, add the dry ingredients in three additions, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a cooling rack to cool completely before frosting.

Once the cakes are completely cooled, you can assemble the cake. Place one layer on a cake board or serving plate, top with a generous layer of buttercream frosting, then place the second layer on top. Spread the remaining frosting on the top and sides of the cake. Decorate with sprinkles.
